Where to Eat Fresh Gulf Oysters Near Sundial Suites

The Gulf around Panama City Beach has been an oyster region forever. Apalachicola is just east. The oyster bars near us range from beach-club casual to old-school institution. Here are the three we send guests to.

Mike’s Cafe & Oyster Bar

Close, cozy, great food, great staff. Mike’s at 17554 Front Beach Road is a few minutes from Sundial and has an oyster bar that’s serious without being a tourist trap. The easy answer when you want a dozen and a beer without planning a whole evening around it.

Captain Anderson’s

The ultimate classy pick. Grand Lagoon institution since 1967. Full raw bar, fresh local catch, a view of the working marina across the lagoon. The oak light canopy out front is one Florida Pro Lighting (our other business) hung and maintains. Reservations strongly recommended in season, the wait at the door can hit 90 minutes in July. About 25 minutes east of Sundial.

Schooners

The beachfront pick. Schooners runs an oyster bar with a respectable raw and chargrilled program, right on Front Beach Road with the Gulf out the back. Long waits in season but grab a drink and walk the beach while you wait, the wait is part of the day. The sunset view earns the price premium.

On reservations and timing

The summer crowds catch most first-time visitors off guard. Restaurants that take walk-ins in October will turn you away in July. Use Open Table or call. Plan ahead Thursday through Sunday. Capt. Anderson’s and Schooners both get long waits during peak season.

Why three and not ten

There are more oyster bars in the PCB area than this list suggests, and a few of them are fine. We keep the list short because we’d rather send guests to a place we’d take our own family. For the broader list of restaurants we send Sundial guests to, the full guide has eight picks across PCB, 30A, and Destin.
