Airports Near Panama City Beach: ECP, VPS, PNS and TLH Compared

Airports Near Panama City Beach, and How Far They Really Are

You have picked Panama City Beach. Now you need to figure out where to fly in. There are five commercial airports within about two hours of PCB, and the cheapest fare is not always the best deal once you add the drive. Here is the honest breakdown, with drive times to Sundial Suites on the west end.

The quick comparison

  • Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP): about 22 to 28 minutes to Sundial. The closest airport and the right answer for most people.
  • Destin-Fort Walton Beach (VPS): about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. More routes, sometimes cheaper fares.
  • Dothan Regional (DHN), Alabama: about 1 hour 45 minutes. Small, limited service.
  • Pensacola International (PNS): about 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours.
  • Tallahassee International (TLH): about 2 hours.

Drive times are without heavy traffic. Add time on summer Saturdays and holiday weekends.

Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP)

ECP is the airport built for PCB. It opened in 2010, replaced the old Panama City-Bay County airport, and sits about 18 miles north of the beach. It is one terminal and one baggage claim, with the rental car counters right across from bag claim. From wheels-down to driving away is usually under 25 minutes.

From Sundial on the west end, the drive from ECP is about 22 to 28 minutes depending on traffic.

Airlines and nonstop cities at ECP (per the airport’s airline page; many routes are seasonal, so check your dates):

  • Delta: Atlanta (multiple daily flights year-round), plus New York, Boston, and Austin.
  • Southwest: Austin, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Nashville, and St. Louis.
  • American: Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Washington, DC.
  • United: Chicago, Denver, and Houston.

Winter schedules thin out, and some cities drop to a few flights a week. If you are coming in the off-season, a connection through Atlanta is the most reliable option.

Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS)

VPS is the alternate most people consider. It has more airlines and more nonstop cities than ECP, including Allegiant, American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, and Sun Country, so it is worth checking when ECP fares are high.

The catch is the drive. VPS is about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes from Sundial, mostly on US-98 through Destin and Santa Rosa Beach, and that stretch backs up in season. The good news for Sundial guests is that the west end is the closest part of PCB to Destin, so you are spared another 20 minutes of PCB traffic on top of it.

Pensacola International Airport (PNS)

PNS is a bigger airport with competitive fares, about 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours from Sundial via I-10 or US-98. It makes sense if you are combining PCB with a few days in Pensacola, or if the fare difference is big enough to cover a long drive each way.

Tallahassee International Airport (TLH)

About 2 hours from Sundial, mostly on I-10 and US-231 or SR-20. Useful mainly if you are already flying into Tallahassee for something else, like a Florida State visit.

Dothan Regional Airport (DHN)

About 1 hour 45 minutes north in Alabama, with limited commercial service, mostly connections through Atlanta. Rarely the best choice, but it can work if you are visiting family in the Wiregrass first.

Which airport should you choose?

A simple rule: fly into ECP unless the alternate saves more than $100 per person. The extra one to two hours of driving each way, plus a rental car you might not otherwise need, eats most of a smaller saving. For a family of four, VPS often wins on price. For a couple on a long weekend, ECP almost always wins on time.

Driving instead? Times from major cities

Plenty of guests skip the airport entirely. Realistic drive times to Sundial on the west end:

  • Dothan, AL: about 1 hour 15 minutes, US-231 south.
  • Pensacola, FL: 1.5 to 2 hours, I-10 or US-98 east.
  • Tallahassee, FL: about 1.75 hours.
  • Mobile, AL: about 2.5 hours, I-10 east.
  • New Orleans, LA: about 4.5 hours, I-10 east the whole way.
  • Birmingham, AL: about 5.5 hours, I-65 south to US-231 through Dothan.
  • Atlanta, GA: 5.5 to 6 hours. My full Atlanta drive guide has the details.
  • Nashville, TN: 7 to 7.5 hours, I-65 south through Birmingham, then US-231.
  • Memphis, TN: about 8 hours.

If you live within about 6 hours and are traveling as a family of four or more, driving usually wins once you add up flights, bags, and a week of rental car.

Rental car or rideshare?

PCB is car-dependent. If you plan to drive to 30A (most Sundial guests do at least once, and my 30A day-trip guide has the route), visit Camp Helen or St. Andrews State Park, or eat around town, rent a car. All the major rental companies have counters at ECP, and they do sell out in peak season (June through August, plus spring break), so book ahead.

If you are staying four nights or fewer and mostly want the beach, rideshare can work. The Gulf is a 3-minute walk from the door. A rideshare from ECP to Sundial typically runs $32 to $45 each way.

Getting from ECP to Sundial Suites

From ECP, take FL-388 west to FL-79 south, then head west on US-98 (Panama City Beach Parkway) toward the west end and follow your GPS to 318 Sundial St, Panama City Beach, FL 32413. Total drive time is about 22 to 28 minutes. Check-in is self check-in with a door code, so a late flight is not a problem. Parking is off-street, right at the building.

Common questions

What is the closest airport to Panama City Beach?

Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP), about 18 miles north of the beach and about 22 to 28 minutes from Sundial Suites on the west end.

Is it better to fly into Destin (VPS) or Panama City (ECP)?

ECP is closer and faster. VPS has more airlines and sometimes lower fares, but adds a drive of about 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20 minutes to Sundial. Choose VPS when it saves more than about $100 per person.

How far is Pensacola airport from Panama City Beach?

About 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours from the west end of Panama City Beach, without heavy traffic.

Do I need a rental car in Panama City Beach?

For most stays, yes. PCB is spread out and car-dependent. For a short beach-focused stay at Sundial, rideshare can work since the Gulf is a 3-minute walk away.
