Rainy Day in Panama City Beach? Here’s What to Do With Kids

You planned a beach week. Then the forecast turned. Now there is a pop-up Gulf thunderstorm parked over the panhandle and the kids are restless before 10am.

This is normal. Panama City Beach averages 60 inches of rain a year, most of it in summer afternoon thunderstorms that pass in 90 minutes. The trick is having a rainy-day playbook ready before the sky opens. Here is the one we hand to Sundial Suites guests.

The fast picks (under 10 minutes from Sundial)

Pier Park indoor shopping and Dave & Buster’s

Pier Park is a 5-minute drive east from Sundial. The outdoor section turns into a wet slog in a thunderstorm, but the indoor anchor, Dave & Buster’s, is the rainy-day home run for kids 6 and up. Arcade games, ticket prizes, food, sports on screens, easy two-hour kill. Younger kids will burn out in 45 minutes, which is fine because the rain may have passed by then.

Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!

Ripley’s at 9907 Front Beach Road is the classic rainy-day tourist attraction for a reason. It works. The Odditorium is a 60-90 minute walk-through suitable for ages 6 and up. About 10 minutes east of Sundial.

WonderWorks (the upside-down building)

Directly across the street from Ripley’s at 9910 Front Beach Road. Three-story upside-down house with hands-on science exhibits, a hurricane simulator the kids will line up for twice, and a ropes course suspended from the ceiling. Best for ages 4 to 12. About 90 minutes minimum visit, more if your kid is into the science exhibits. 10 minutes east of Sundial.

Skywheel (200-foot Ferris wheel), if rain is light

This is a “judgment call” rainy day option. The Skywheel at Pier Park keeps running through light rain and the glass-enclosed gondolas mean kids stay dry. In a heavy thunderstorm they shut it down. Worth checking. If it is running, an off-peak rainy day is the best time to ride because there is no line. 5 minutes east of Sundial.

Indoor active picks

810 Billiards & Bowling (bowling + arcade + bar food)

810 Billiards & Bowling at 9902 South Thomas Drive is the closest bowling alley to Sundial, about 15 minutes east. 16 lanes, glow-in-the-dark mode in the evenings, arcade games, axe throwing bays, and a full kitchen with burgers and chicken tenders for kids. Two hours and the kids are fed and tired. Rock’it Lanes is the other option, also east end.

Off the Hook Family Fun Center

Two-story indoor entertainment center about 18 minutes east of Sundial. Mini bowling, arcade, indoor playground, redemption ticket games. Lower ceiling than Dave & Buster’s but cheaper, less crowded, and the playground works for the toddler-to-eight age group that Dave & Buster’s misses.

Kartona Electric Speedway (indoor go-karts)

Kartona at 7125 W Hwy 98 is the indoor electric go-kart track. Climate-controlled, runs in any weather. Karts hit 45 mph. Minimum height requirement applies (usually 48 inches for the driver). The 5-and-under crowd has to skip but the 8-and-up sibling group will think you are a vacation hero. About 12 minutes east of Sundial. Race City’s outdoor go-karts shut down in rain.

XL Sky Adventures (indoor zip lines + ropes course)

Indoor adventure center with a ropes course, zip line, and trampoline area. Best for kids 6 and up; younger kids can use the trampoline section. About 20 minutes east of Sundial.

Indoor learning picks (when you want a quieter rainy day)

Science and Discovery Center of Northwest Florida

Located in Panama City proper, about 25 minutes from Sundial. Hands-on science museum with a small aquarium, planetarium shows on weekends, and a kid-scaled grocery store exhibit that 3-to-7-year-olds love. Cheap entry (under $10 per person). The drive is the only friction; for a long rainy day it is more than worth it.

Panama City Beach Public Library

Yes, the library. The PCB library has a kids’ section, comfortable seating, free wifi, and clean bathrooms. Check their event calendar for story time and other kids’ programs. Bring a sack lunch (most public libraries allow it in the lobby) and you have a free three-hour rainy morning. About 12 minutes east of Sundial.

Movie theater at Pier Park

The Grand Theatres at Pier Park is the closest movie option. Bonus rainy-day move: matinee pricing earlier in the day. Set up a noon showing and a later afternoon showing back-to-back if you really need to kill a day.

Indoor pool plans

The Sundial pool is outdoor only, so a rainy day takes that off the table. Some hotels on Front Beach Road offer day-pass access to their pools when not at capacity, but policies vary widely by season and weekend. The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Beachfront has both indoor and outdoor pools. Call ahead before driving over, day-pass policies change often.

Cooking together in your suite

This sounds underwhelming until you do it. Each Sundial suite has a fully stocked kitchen, full-size fridge, oven, stovetop, dishwasher, coffee maker. Rainy afternoon, hit Carousel on Front Beach Road (or the Publix at Carillon Beach, 8 minutes west of Sundial), buy ingredients for chocolate chip cookies or homemade pizza or strawberry shortcake, and turn the kids loose in the kitchen.

The reason we mention this last is because it is what works best. A rainy day inside the suite, kids elbow-deep in flour, music playing, that is the day a kid actually remembers from a beach trip. The Pier Park arcade is forgotten by the next morning. The cookies are not.
